The Dutch general cargo vessel Thamesborg has safely completed its first transit of Canada’s Northwest Passage since running aground on an uncharted shoal in 2025. The 172-meter vessel passed through the passage between Aug. 13 and Aug. 18, completing the transit in around five days.

Last year, Thamesborg ran aground in Franklin Strait while sailing from China to Quebec. The vessel suffered damage to its hull and ballast tanks. During a month-long salvage operation, more than 5,000 tons of cargo were transferred to other vessels to reduce the ship’s draft. The vessel was refloated in October, left the Arctic and was later taken to a Turkish shipyard for repairs.

The exact cause of the grounding has not yet been determined, while the investigation by the Transportation Safety Board of Canada remains ongoing. Wagenborg said it remains committed to safe navigation in the Northwest Passage, with a strong focus on preparation, training and cooperation with local authorities.

The 2026 Northwest Passage season is expected to be particularly active for expedition vessels. Passenger and expedition ships such as Seabourn Venture, MS Fridtjof Nansen and Ocean Victory are among the vessels operating in or preparing to transit the passage.
