Developments in the Black Sea over the past week have once again highlighted ongoing security risks for regional maritime traffic. Reports indicate that the Turkish-linked ships Medkon SIA, Kıran Marmara, and Fethiye-M were subjected to drone strikes.

The attacks occurred while the vessels were en route in convoy to Ukrainian ports. The nature of the strikes and the deliberate targeting underscore the heightened threat level facing commercial ships in the region. While no confirmed reports of fatalities or serious injuries have been shared, the incidents are being closely monitored by shipowners, operators, and insurance circles active along the Black Sea corridor.

Experts stress the need to reassess security protocols, particularly for vessels operating on Ukraine-related routes. Maritime authorities and industry representatives emphasize that Turkish ships, along with all commercial fleets planning voyages in the region, should update risk assessments, strengthen convoy coordination, and make greater use of security consultancy services.

The ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Black Sea continue to exert pressure on commercial maritime operations. The latest attacks indicate that operational risks in the region are unlikely to diminish in the short term.

Meanwhile, the uncertainty of war, rising fuel prices, expensive labor, and high inflation are further eroding Turkey’s export competitiveness.

High oil prices reduce the real national income of oil-importing countries. Since oil consumption cannot be reduced in proportion to price increases, total oil expenditures rise, leaving less national income available for other spending.

Turkey’s key export items include automobiles, ready-to-wear clothing and textiles, household appliances, and agricultural and food products. On the import side, the country’s largest categories are natural gas and oil, automobiles, and electronic devices.
