Global energy companies reported strong financial results in the third quarter of 2026, driven by rising oil and natural gas prices and higher refining margins.

Spanish energy company Repsol increased its net profit nearly fourfold in the first nine months of the year, reaching €5 billion, approximately $5.6 billion.

Shell’s third-quarter revenue reached $92.8 billion, with the company reporting that higher natural gas prices contributed to its stronger financial performance. TotalEnergies, meanwhile, posted a net profit of $8.3 billion over the same period.

Refining margins climb to $42

Disruptions to oil and natural gas supplies in West Asia played a significant role in boosting energy companies’ profits.

Interruptions to the production and export of refined petroleum products in the region allowed refineries outside the conflict zone to operate with higher margins.

According to Bloomberg data, refining margins rose from around $24 per barrel in the second quarter to $42 in the third quarter.

This surpassed the previous record set following Russia’s military intervention in Ukraine in 2022.

Russian export restrictions also contribute

Ukrainian drone attacks targeting Russia’s energy infrastructure were among the developments that further tightened supply.

Following the attacks, Russia imposed restrictions on exports of certain petroleum products, particularly gasoline and diesel, adding to pressure on global fuel supplies.

Logistical disruptions also widened the gap between crude oil prices and those of refined petroleum products.

Shell and TotalEnergies increase shareholder returns

Shell and TotalEnergies used their higher profits to increase payments to shareholders.

Both companies had already reported strong profit growth in the first two quarters of 2026. Sharp price movements in oil and natural gas futures markets also helped boost revenues from their trading activities.

‘We delivered very strong financial results’

Shell CEO Wael Sawan said the company had delivered “very strong financial results” during a quarter marked by significant disruptions to the global energy system.

TotalEnergies CEO Patrick Pouyanné said the company had benefited from refining margins reaching historic levels and rising natural gas prices.

BP, Chevron and ExxonMobil next

As earnings announcements across the energy sector continue, BP and US-based Chevron and ExxonMobil are expected to release their third-quarter financial results on Friday.

Russ Mould, Investment Director at AJ Bell, noted that energy companies last achieved similar profit levels in 2022, cautioning that current market conditions may not be sustainable.
