South Korea Prepares for First Container Voyage via Northern Sea Route

South Korean exporters are showing strong interest in the country's first container shipping voyage via the Northern Sea Route (NSR). The 2,800-TEU vessel, operated by PanStar Line, is scheduled to depart Busan on 22 August, calling at Rotterdam, Hamburg, and Gdansk.

Following the opening of bookings for the service, demand has increased rapidly for a wide range of cargoes, including automotive parts, synthetic resins, used vehicles, food products, cosmetics, and steel products. Rising bookings for transshipment cargo from Japan and China have also strengthened expectations that the route could evolve into a multimodal logistics network linking Northeast Asia and Europe in the future.

During the voyage through the Arctic Ocean, temperatures are expected to range between 1°C and 8°C, conditions that are considered favorable for maintaining cargo quality.

As South Korea seeks alternative shipping routes due to geopolitical risks in the Suez Canal and security concerns in the Red Sea, the Northern Sea Route is gaining attention for its shorter sailing distance and reduced transit times. The government also aims to establish an alternative Asia-Europe trade link by following China's container shipping model developed along the NSR.

PanStar Line, which provides passenger and cargo transportation services between South Korea, Japan, and China, was the only company to participate in the tender for South Korea's pilot Northern Sea Route service to Europe.
