Russia’s oil exports through the Northern Sea Route (NSR) exceeded last year’s level by approximately 50% in 2026. From the start of the navigation season in July until mid-October, around 20 million barrels of oil were transported to Asia.

The route, which passes through the ice-covered waters of the Arctic, has become increasingly popular due to disruptions to maritime transport around the Suez Canal, the Strait of Hormuz and the Black Sea. Requiring icebreaker support and involving high costs, the Northern Sea Route is emerging as an alternative corridor amid risks along traditional routes and rising tanker freight rates.

The risks faced by Russian oil shipments due to tankers being detained in European waters are also increasing the importance of the Northern Sea Route. According to current estimates, a further 5 to 10 million barrels are expected to be added to oil exports through this route before the navigation season ends. Russia shipped 13 million barrels of oil via the route during last year’s navigation season.

Russian energy company Gazprom Neft is also expected to increase its oil shipments through the Northern Sea Route by approximately 35% this year compared with 2025. In addition to oil, the route is also used to transport liquefied natural gas (LNG) and other cargoes to Asian markets.

Russia aims to increase annual cargo volumes transported through the Northern Sea Route to 70 million metric tonnes by the end of the decade. Rosneft’s Vostok Oil project in northern Russia is also expected to contribute to an increase in shipping volumes along the route.
