One of Turkey's leading shipyards, DESAN, has completed another significant milestone in its Multi-Purpose Vessel project for the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA). The "Project Acceptance Letter" was signed today at the DESAN Shipyard in Istanbul during a ceremony attended by the Secretary General of the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Commander of the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency.

The "Pre-Acceptance Letter" for the project had been signed by DESAN's Board Chairman, Cenk İsmail Kaptanoğlu, and the Secretary General of the Ministry of Home Affairs during President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's visit to Malaysia on February 11, 2025. With today's signing of the Project Acceptance Letter, the construction process of the vessel has officially begun.

The 99-meter-long vessel, which will be built by DESAN in Turkey within 24 months, will be the largest vessel in the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency's fleet. Additionally, it will play a significant role in enhancing the capabilities of the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency.

Equipped with four fast-response boats and two HAVELSAN BAHA Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) capable of vertical take-off and landing, an 11-ton helicopter platform, a medical/health services area, 45 detention capacity, and space for 70 personnel and 30 passengers, the vessel will be capable of operating continuously for 30 days.

The vessel is planned to be deployed in the South China Sea region and will play a critical role in maritime security, combating transnational crimes, smuggling, and illegal fishing in open waters.

In this project, certified by Turkish Lloyd, advanced technological components such as weapon systems, electronic and communication systems, and unmanned aerial vehicles will be integrated with contributions from leading Turkish defense industry companies like ASELSAN and HAVELSAN.

DESAN Shipyard's Board Chairman, Cenk İsmail Kaptanoğlu, made the following statement regarding the project: “Turkey has made significant progress in the defense industry, achieving a respected position globally. At DESAN, we take great pride in contributing to the strengthening of this position and expanding it into different regions through our domestic and international projects, with the involvement of private shipyards.

The project, which we plan to complete within 24 months based on the urgent needs of the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency, will be carried out at the newly established Atlas Shipyard, which was specifically designed for new builds and added to our portfolio at the end of 2024. This project will be a strategic step in further advancing the cooperation between the friendly and brotherly nations of Malaysia and Turkey.”
