Ferry Fire in Indonesia: 5 Dead, 41 Missing

A ferry carrying more than 250 people caught fire off Indonesia’s Madura Island, leaving at least 5 people dead, while 41 people who jumped into the water were reported missing.

A disaster occurred off Indonesia’s Madura Island. Five people were killed after a ferry carrying at least 250 people caught fire while sailing at sea. Forty-one people who jumped into the water to escape the flames were reported missing.

In a statement, Indonesia’s National Search and Rescue Agency (BASARNAS) said the Surabaya Search and Rescue Office received a report at 08:24 local time today that the vessel named KMP Mutiara Sentosa 2 was on fire. The statement said, “According to information received from the shipping company, the fire occurred between 06:00 and 07:00.”

Authorities said search and rescue efforts were continuing and that an investigation into the fire had been launched.
