Black Sea Ship Attacks Reach UN Security Council

Attacks targeting Turkish-owned and Turkish-flagged commercial vessels in the Black Sea have been brought to the agenda of the United Nations Security Council through the initiatives of Metin Düzgit, a member of the Assembly of the Chamber of Shipping (IMEAK DTO) and Vice Chairman of the Board of the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS).

At the ICS Board meeting held on September 15, Metin Düzgit shared with board members the toll of attacks targeting commercial vessels in the Black Sea. Düzgit also put forward his proposals for concrete steps that need to be implemented to ensure the safety of seafarers and protect commercial vessels.

ICS Delivers Clear Message at the UN Security Council

Following this initiative, the Secretary General of the ICS drew attention to the issue at the United Nations Security Council meeting held in New York on September 17. In his speech, he explicitly emphasized that attacks targeting commercial vessels and seafarers cannot be accepted in any region of the world, particularly in the Black Sea.

The ICS Secretariat also decided to intensify its efforts at the International Maritime Organization (IMO) with the aim of developing concrete solutions to prevent such attacks rather than limiting its response to statements of condemnation.

In a statement issued by the Chamber of Shipping (IMEAK DTO), it was stated that initiatives on international platforms will continue in order to protect the safety of seafarers, ensure the safety and security of commercial vessels, and safeguard the rights of shipowners.
