The 9th Istanbul Bunker Conference left a remarkable mark on the maritime fuel industry — not just through its technical content, but also through the synergy, sincerity, and vision it fostered. We spoke with Hasan Cemrek, Vice President of the Turkish Bunker Association (Gemi Yakıt İkmalcileri Derneği), about the story behind this success, the message it delivered to the global sector, and the hopes it inspires for the future.

Mr. Cemrek, this year’s conference has been described by many as “legendary.”

How would you define it?

I see this conference not merely as an event but as the reflection of a shared spirit and a collective vision for the future. In the enchanting ambiance of Istanbul, we blended technical expertise with human connection. Every detail was meticulously curated, infused with a powerful sense of unity and togetherness. What became legendary wasn’t just the program — it was the feeling of mutual belonging that permeated it all.

Who contributed to this great success?

The key to our success was our tireless conference committee and dedicated board members, who worked day and night, paying attention to even the smallest details. Their dedication, vision, and contribution were the foundation upon which this organization was built.

Of course, we must also highlight the vital role of our sponsors. They did more than provide financial support — they added prestige, energy, and professionalism to the event. Thanks to them, we elevated the conference to a new level in every respect.

Equally important were our association members, who contributed their personal support and heartfelt hospitality, creating a sincere and welcoming environment throughout the event. This atmosphere left a lasting impression on all participants — they were the invisible yet powerful building blocks of this success.

And of course, we must acknowledge our strategic partner IBIA and our esteemed speakers, each an expert in their field. We made a deliberate effort to feature fresh faces and promising youth — we avoided seeing the same names at every event. We especially gave space to young Turkish professionals who have achieved remarkable success in the global bunker and maritime arena. The results were beyond gratifying: many of them, previously hidden talents, became the ones participants asked to be introduced to — now recognized, valued, and sought after in the industry. Some of their statements are already being referenced and are paving the way for innovation. This is both significant and a source of great pride.

What kind of impact did the technical content have?

The technical sessions were designed not just to address current developments but also to offer a clear vision for the future of the sector. Naturally, the top agenda was the Mediterranean SOx ECA regulation that came into effect on May 1, 2025. In addition, we explored new fuels, their environmental impacts, regulatory perspectives, sustainability, and global compliance — these were the core focus of every session.

In fact, for the first time, Turkey’s advantages and comparative strengths in certain areas were clearly highlighted. These are historic insights that will have lasting value.

We now know that to stay relevant in a changing world, it’s not enough to keep up — we must lead the transformation. As a sector, we must develop efficient, innovative, and environmentally responsible business models. This conference was filled with knowledge and vision that inspired participants not only with technical insight but with a sense of purpose for the future.

How were the social events and the overall atmosphere?

With the ambiance created by the Bosphorus as our backdrop, the gala dinners and musical evenings became unforgettable experiences for our guests. The after parties, in particular, were warm and intimate moments that strengthened friendships. Participants enjoyed a professionally fulfilling and socially rich experience. Many have already begun asking about the date of the next conference  could there be a better compliment than that?

What role did international participation play?

Hosting numerous participants from both Türkiye and abroad in Istanbul’s unique setting was a great honor. This wasn’t just a professional gathering; it was a powerful opportunity to showcase both our beautiful city and our country. Guests were captivated by the charm of Istanbul, Turkish culture, and our renowned hospitality. I can confidently say this event once again solidified Istanbul’s reputation as a cultural and tourism capital on the international stage.

What did participants walk away with?

Without a doubt, our guests left the conference equipped with knowledge, inspired by new partnerships, and enriched by new friendships. Many told us, “This conference gave me more than just information — it gave me vision and meaningful connections.” That kind of feedback is our greatest source of motivation.

What are your goals going forward?

Although the Istanbul Bunker Conference was originally planned to be held biennially, that rhythm was disrupted for various reasons. Now, we are fully committed to restoring that tradition and establishing it as a true fixture on the global calendar. This conference has become a “brand” — when people think of bunker conferences, they think of Istanbul.

But our goal isn’t just to repeat the event — it’s to raise the bar every time. As the region’s most important bunkering hub, Istanbul deserves a conference that nourishes and reflects its strategic value. Consider this: we had representatives from 146 different companies. When you include their staff, partners, and stakeholders, we’re reaching thousands — perhaps tens of thousands — of people talking about Istanbul, Türkiye, our industry, and our conference. Social media engagement is continuing to grow, and we’ve already seen some posts reach 2,500 to 3,000 views.

I must also underline this: if Türkiye wants to claim a greater share of the global supply chain, civil society organizations and government institutions must collaborate under a shared vision. This conference proved how possible that is. If we move forward with a focus on efficiency, cooperation, and sustainability, the contributions of our sector to our country’s economy will reach entirely new heights.

Finally, how would you summarize this achievement?

We created the world’s best conference — shaped and realized through the contributions of our sponsors, speakers, and esteemed members. This wasn’t just an event. It was the manifestation of a shared vision, belief, and spirit of unity.

As long as we stand together, we will always be stronger.
