Explosion at Rotterdam Port: 1 Person Killed

An explosion occurred at a Gunvor Energy oil facility in the Europoort area of the Port of Rotterdam in the Netherlands, killing one person and injuring several others. Emergency teams, including ambulances, firefighters and a trauma helicopter, were dispatched to the scene following the blast, and the injured were taken to hospital.

The explosion reportedly occurred while maintenance work was being carried out at the facility. A maintenance team was working on pipelines at the time, although authorities have not yet determined the exact cause of the blast. Police and the Dutch Labour Inspectorate have launched an investigation into the incident.

The affected facility is operated by Gunvor Energy and is part of the large industrial complex within the Port of Rotterdam. The incident did not significantly affect other major operations in the port, with LNG terminals and Shell facilities continuing to operate.

A separate power outage was also reported elsewhere in the port on the same day. The outage temporarily affected operations at a nearby ExxonMobil refinery, but port authorities said there was no indication that the power disruption was connected to the explosion.

Authorities have secured the area and are continuing investigations to determine how the blast occurred. Gunvor Energy is cooperating with the authorities as the investigation continues.
