Russia: Ukraine Attacked Cargo Ships in the Sea of Azov
Russian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Maria Zakharova stated that the attack on the cargo vessels Natra and Zirkon, which were sailing from Türkiye to the port of Rostov-on-Don in the Sea of Azov, was carried out by Ukraine.

Russian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Maria Zakharova commented on the drone attacks targeting the Belize-flagged bulk carrier Natra and the Palau-flagged bulk carrier Zirkon in the Sea of Azov.
According to Zakharova, the attacks were carried out by Ukraine. “According to information received from the competent Russian authorities, the Natra and Zirkon vessels, which were sailing from Türkiye to the port of Rostov-on-Don, came under attack in the Sea of Azov during the night. There are fatalities and injuries on board both vessels, including Azerbaijani citizens. The injured seafarers were assisted by a passing Russian vessel and units of Russia’s Federal Security Service Border Guard. We extend our deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives and wish a speedy recovery to the injured. The circumstances of the incident are being investigated. Based on the available information, the vessels were attacked by Ukrainian drones. This once again demonstrates the terrorist nature of the Kyiv regime, which is increasingly targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure,” she said.
Zakharova also noted that Russia is maintaining close contact with the Azerbaijani Embassy in Moscow and the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry.
“The Russian side will provide our Azerbaijani partners with all necessary assistance in obtaining information about the incident and ensuring consular access to Azerbaijani citizens,” she added.
Five Seafarers Killed
According to information provided by Russia’s Taman Maritime Rescue Coordination Center, the Belize-flagged Natra was struck by four drones, resulting in the deaths of two crew members. A fire that broke out on board was extinguished by the crew, and the vessel remained afloat, although it reportedly requires towing assistance.
The Palau-flagged Zirkon was also hit by four drones that struck the vessel’s superstructure. Three crew members were killed in the attack, while the remaining crew abandoned the ship using lifeboats.
