MIP General Manager Johan Van Daele said that as one of the world's 100 largest container ports, they are Turkey's gateway to mutual trade with 190 countries.

Mersin International Port (MIP), which is an important connection point in trade not only for Mersin and Turkey, but also with Iraq, Syria and the countries in the Eastern Mediterranean, continues its investments uninterruptedly in order to get a larger share from the developing freight traffic and to meet the ship and capacity expectations. MIP, which is Turkey's largest multi-purpose port providing container, conventional, Ro-Ro and maritime services with an area of 124 hectares, provides regular service to 6,200 customers around the world. MIP General Manager Johan Van Daele stated that they directly employ more than 3 thousand people and indirectly 25 thousand people and stated that Turkey has a 75.4 percent market share among the Eastern Mediterranean ports with 32 different services.

One of the 100 largest container ports

Stating that MIP also has a market share of 17.1 percent in terms of import, export and transit container business volume among container ports in Turkey, Johan Van Daele said, “MIP's strategic location, capacity, land, air and railway Turkey's leading port with combined transportation options offers to Turkey's industrialized cities and neighboring countries thanks to its connections. It also has a diversified, fast-developing hinterland with an established ecosystem. MIP, one of the world's top 100 container ports, is Turkey's gateway to mutual trade with 190 countries.

61 years of conventional record broken

Stating that they provide uninterrupted service within the port area despite the negativities caused by the pandemic conditions around the world, Johan Van Daele stated that they achieved a growth of 4.4 percent in container business volume and 19 percent in conventional business volume in 2021 compared to the previous year. Van Daele said, “MIP has reached two important milestones in container and conventional business volume in 2021. With a conventional business volume of 9 million tons, MIP achieved the historical record of 61, and a new Turkey record with 2.1 million TEU in container business volume.

Container handling capacity to be increased to 3.6 million TEUs

Expressing that with the capacity increase project, which will increase the current capacity of the port by 1 million TEU, they will provide additional employment opportunities for 500 people directly and 5 thousand people indirectly, and continued as follows: “This investment, which we plan to put into service in 20 months with a budget of 375 million dollars, will be the permanent value of Mersin.  With the commissioning of the project, our container capacity will increase to 3.6 million TEU. We aim to further increase our operational capability by adding 4 quay cranes and 24 field cranes to the EMH2 terminal, which is planned to be operational in 2023. In addition, with the extension of the EMH terminal, we will optimize our ship waiting times by serving 2 mega ships at the same time.”

With 27 million dollar budget

Johan Van Daele, who stated that they aim to bring a definitive solution to the traffic density caused by the port from the past in Mersin, said, “When our project becomes operational, the trucks arriving at the port will be able to connect directly to the highway without entering the city traffic. Thus, a more efficient truck traffic management will be ensured, and our cargo handling process will be accelerated. Vehicles arriving at the CFS area will be able to enter the port area without stopping and without interrupting the railway, with a separate branch to be opened in the Adana direction of the D-400 junction. The bureaucracy of our Gates Project with a budget of 27 million dollars continues.”
