Celebrating 43 Years and Embracing Global Transformation

Chairman Tamer Kıran opened his speech by celebrating the Chamber’s 43rd anniversary. He emphasized the need for Turkish maritime stakeholders to adapt to the evolving global order, highlighting the importance of managing this transformation with strategic foresight and unity.

Geopolitical Developments and Trade Implications

Kıran discussed diplomatic efforts led by U.S. President Donald Trump to end the ongoing Russia–Ukraine war, and the recent peace declaration signed between Azerbaijan and Armenia regarding the Zangezur Corridor. He noted the potential impact of these developments on regional stability and international trade.

U.S. Tariffs and Competitive Pressures

Kıran shared updates on the gradual phasing out of U.S. trade tariffs, detailing new rates for key regions and countries. He also addressed inflation trends in Turkey and the Central Bank’s recent interest rate cuts, stressing the importance of strong fiscal policy tools in navigating economic challenges.

Maritime Sector Protocols and Regulatory Outlook

On August 1, IMEAK DTO signed a protocol with the General Directorate for the Protection of Natural Assets to conduct feasibility studies for boatbuilding and mooring zones along Turkey’s coasts. Kıran also previewed the upcoming IMO MEPC meeting in October, where the Net Zero Framework proposal will be voted on—potentially introducing major cost burdens but also strategic opportunities for green transformation.

Fisheries Season and Bodrum Boat Show

Kıran announced the start of the new fisheries season on September 1 and shared good news for Istanbul-based fishermen, who will now be able to land their catch at Zeyport Port. He also highlighted preparations for the inaugural Bodrum Boat Show, to be held October 15–19 in cooperation with Muğla Metropolitan Municipality.

Sectoral Briefings and Member Contributions

The meeting featured a presentation by Prof. Dr. Erhan Aslanoğlu on global and Turkish economic indicators. Sustainability Commission Chair Serdar Akdemir introduced the Chamber’s Sustainability Bulletin and announced the upcoming “2nd Maritime Green Transformation Summit” in November. KOSDER Chair Neslihan Torlak Gönençer addressed recent operational challenges faced by coastal shipowners at ports.

The meeting concluded with remarks and suggestions from Assembly members.
