Sanmar Shipyards Marks Milestone with 14th All-Electric Tug
Sanmar Shipyards has successfully completed sea trials for its 14th fully electric tugboat, a major achievement coinciding with the company’s 50th anniversary.
The vessel, an ElectRA 2500SX design named DINAMO IV, highlights Sanmar’s leadership in advancing sustainable, emissions-free towage solutions.
Developed in partnership with Canadian naval architects Robert Allan Ltd., the ElectRA Series combines modern design with cutting-edge battery technology from Corvus Energy. These tugs deliver high-performance towing capabilities while eliminating environmental impact at the point of use.
DINAMO IV demonstrated outstanding results during trials, measuring 25.40m in length, 12.86m in breadth, and a 5.40m draft. Equipped with a 1,808 kWh battery system, the tug achieves a bollard pull of 70 tonnes and a top speed of 12.5 knots, proving that green propulsion can match—and even surpass—conventional alternatives.
Since its launch in 2021, the ElectRA Series has been deployed across Europe, North America, and Latin America, serving operators such as HaiSea Marine, SAAM Towage, Svitzer, Buksér og Berging, and BOTAŞ. The series has earned industry recognition, including the ITS 2023 Tug of the Year award for HAISEA WAMIS and a 2026 shortlist for SAAM TRAPANANDA.

With 14 ElectRA tugs completed and a 15th under construction, Sanmar continues to drive innovation in eco-friendly propulsion, meeting the maritime industry’s growing demand for sustainable solutions.
