In January alone, 20 new dual-fuel ship orders were placed, underscoring the sector’s commitment to decarbonization and the positive trend in newbuilding activity.

The majority of these orders were for LNG-powered ships. Out of the 20, 16 were LNG dual-fuel designs, while the remainder included LPG-fueled vessels and one methanol-powered ship. LNG continues to lead among alternative fuels, with the container ship segment driving much of this growth.

Industry officials emphasize that despite market fluctuations and regulatory uncertainties, cargo owners and operators remain steadfast in their decarbonization strategies. As a result, dual-fuel ships now account for about 40% of total orderbook tonnage and more than 15% of total ship orders.

Nevertheless, the share of alternative-fuel ships in the existing global fleet remains limited: approximately 4% by tonnage and just over 1% by vessel count, highlighting that the transformation is still in its early stages.

By fuel type, LNG dominates both the current fleet and new orders. However, methanol-fueled ships are rapidly gaining traction on the order side, signaling strong growth potential. Meanwhile, ammonia-fueled ships are not yet widespread, though new projects—particularly in the car carrier segment—are beginning to emerge.

According to World Shipping Council data, as of early 2026, 400 dual-fuel container ships and car carriers have been delivered, a sharp increase compared to 218 at the same time last year. Additionally, by the end of 2025, the orderbook included 726 dual-fuel vessels.

Statistics show that approximately 74% of container ship orders and 87% of car carrier orders are dual-fuel designs. This clearly demonstrates that dual-fuel technology has become the dominant choice in both segments.
